Working with the challenge design team behind Survivor, we designed every mission in Field Tested around a pretty simple rule: It had to work as competition first.
Each challenge was based on a real Army job, but nobody wanted a three-day recruitment video. The missions needed to feel authentic to the soldiers, understandable to a Twitch audience, and entertaining enough that people actually wanted to stick around to see what happened.
Finding somewhere to do all of that was another matter. We searched nationwide before landing at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center: 155 acres of legitimate training infrastructure, serious terrain, and an elite-level obstacle course that made a pretty great final boss for Day 3.
Perfect. Except for one small problem:
It was 155 acres.
